For 2016, Pantone chose Rose Quartz and Serenity as its colors of the year to evoke a “soothing sense of order and peace.” In fact, the year had harsher hues: the red of Make America Great Again hats, Trump orange, and purple for Prince’s death and Hillary Clinton’s concession.
Will 2017 be a year of Greenery, “symbolic of new beginnings”?

Jessica Helfand, a founding editor of Design Observer, is an award-winning graphic designer and writer and a former contributing editor and columnist for Print, Communications Arts and Eye magazines. A member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and a recent laureate of the Art Director’s Hall of Fame, Helfand received her B.A. and her M.F.A. from Yale University where she has taught since 1994.
