The Observatory: Words, Pictures, Sounds
On this episode, Jessica Helfand and Michael Bierut look ahead to Design Observer’s What Design Sounds Like, a one-day symposium in New York on February 21st, and to Everything Is Design: The Work of Paul Rand, an exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York that runs from February 25th to July 19th.
They also discuss the Thesis Book Project, a joint initiative of Design Observer and Blurb. Jessica talks about her thesis book, a 194-page investigation of the square. Here’s what her adviser had to say:

Jessica Helfand, a founding editor of Design Observer, is an award-winning graphic designer and writer and a former contributing editor and columnist for Print, Communications Arts and Eye magazines. A member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and a recent laureate of the Art Director’s Hall of Fame, Helfand received her B.A. and her M.F.A. from Yale University where she has taught since 1994.
